HP6

Harry Potter 6 was crappy.

I wish I had AJ's silver tongue when it comes to writing movie reviews, but I don't.

Imagine all the things a movie needs, like drama, a climax, or giving a shit about the characters, now get rid of those, and add in a truly wretchedly written book. There you go.

Better than Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, but only by a HAIR. If I could have cut and hour from the plot, and changed a little dialogue, I would have LOVED T2: Rolling on the Floor, but no amount of cutting could have saved HP6: giving less than Half a shit about Snape.

REMEMBER HIM? SNAPE? Like, the main character in book 6? He gets maybe 5 minutes of airtime.

LAME.

gay romance and fantasy

I'm outlining a new, much more interesting [to me] novel. One of the main reasons the first novel I began to write had such halting progress was both my lack of a good outline, and my lack of real interest in the characters. I've gone back to the first novel I imagined, and starting from scratch on that.

With that said, I've encountered a major thematic stumbling block: MALE HOMOSEXUAL ROMANCE. This is:
A-something I enjoy reading
B- something that doesn't show up very often in fantasy novels

The story really suggests that the main character and the guy he spends a lot of time with are more than friends. Do I let the romance happen between the lines? That might sell better, but be much less honest. I really despised Rowling for not making an explicit stance on Dumbledore being a homosexual. It's relevant to the backstory! I don't want to be another one of those authors (JKR) who only say in interviews that a character is one way or the other.

Can a fantasy novel have gay romance in it without being a Gay Romance? I want to say yes, but I have a feeling most people who read books would say no? I wouldn't want that to be why someone does, or doesn't read the book.

Ethically, do I have a responsibility to portray this romance? I'm not contriving to make these characters fall in love for some political statement, it's just the kind of romance I prefer.

No matter what, the love story will be there, the question is, is there a really compelling reason to hide it? More compelling than any ethical or narrative obligations?
I'm back home in North Providence, and it's good to be back.

It was a long, arduous journey, but mostly free of drama. My only big annoyance was all the layover time I had, both in Japan and Chicago. I wanted to sleep, but I also didn't want to miss my flight.

I'm home now, and it's relax-o-clock. Of course, I woke up after only 5-6 hours of sleeping, but I'm going to fix that with a nice postprandial nap. delightful.

I look forward to seeing everyone local, asap.

My birthday is on Friday (the 26th) for those of you who care about stuff like that.

I keep meaning to post essays that are particularly great, but never really get around to it.

Well, here you go, with all spelling, puntuation and line breaks intact:

Q: What's your favorite food?

My favorite food is meat.
There are many kind of meat
Example, of the fish, chi
cken beef, pork
Usually my house ate the meat
twice a week. When I was
eating meat, I was so happy.
Meat is decious. And meat
has protein, so it is good
for our body. I love meat
forever.

He's in 2nd grade! I'm pretty impressed, especially since his speaking is not nearly this good.
OK, I lied.

I lied about not having more to say about Star Trek.

I went to see the partial-birth-abortion that was WOLVERINE on Tuesday (which I had off for Children's Day). What a load of crap THAT was! I didn't see a single character portrayed to my liking, although I was pleased to see Gambit finally make a fucking showing.

I didn't have even remotely high standards for Wolverine, and I was STILL disappointed.

Star Trek, on the other hand, hadn't already burned me (I'm looking at YOU, X-Men 3...). I had high expectations. And I was STILL pleased.

Now, to qualify. I am not a Star Trek Original Series fan. I never got very into it, of course I did SEE quite a few episodes, but no where near my near complete survey of Next Gen episodes (which were on two separate channels back to back, so I could easily get in 3-4 hours a day after school. sad but true).

On the other hand, I'm a much bigger fan of X-men, so nitpicky details bother me. BUT! Wolverine's PLOT was also very bad.

Plotwise, Star Trek was very engaging. I had a smile on my face for 95% of it, and the other 5%, I don't think was aimed at me (the big space monsters on the ice planet, for example.)

I think the (SPOILER) establishment of an alternate timeline for events via time travel was a very elegant way to change the canon.

Acting-wise? Very pleased.

My friend said to me, "It's nice to see that crony-ism is strong in Starfleet.

I was extra-double impressed by McCoy and Scotty! But Spock delivered on all of it's promises.

All I want now? MORE.

wow, that was just as bad as I thought it would be...

You know when someone evaluates something poorly, and you just can't take their word for it? No matter how much you may trust them, you have to watch/eat/listen to it. When it is inevitably poor, there is both chagrin at not listening to them, but also satisfaction at making your own opinion.

I just finished SEEKER, THE DARK IS RISING, which I knew, both from reviews and my own instinct, would be wretchedly bad.

AND IT WAS.

Do I feel chagrin? Yes. Also satisfaction? Yes.

But my unstoppable rage is that it was a truly offensively poor adaptation of one of my favorite books. If you havent read the Dark is Rising sequence, I recommend it most strongly.

Just avoid the movie.

(Now I'm going to rewatch The Pirates of Darkwater.....which would make a GREAT movie....if adapted correctly)

Writing Journal

I am restarting an old writing journal:

whitecrescent

It conveniently used a place name from the last story I was writing, which then got recycled into the new novel, so no need to rename! Thank goodness.

I intend to post as if I was serializing the novel, a la Dickens, etc. I hope this will encourage people to read, as they will be posted in lengths that shouldn't take more than 5 or so minutes to read. I'm aiming for one passage/week.

I also plan to post illustrations of the characters and the world.

I hope I can get some feedback. I'm not yet comfortable with showing my work to strangers. I know that's a little silly, since the ultimate goal is of course publication, but the story is still in its infancy, and isn't yet up to rough handling.

As of now there isn't anything, but there will be a scene up ASAP.

sickness in a foreign land

Sickness in a foreign land is not enjoyable. I wisely brought my favorite cold remedies, nyquil and dayquil, but some things could not be brought. Like, my mom, or chicken soup that is guaranteed to have no tripe in it.

They also do not have ginger ale, or tissues with aloe--not that I have found. Bear in mind of course, that I cant read Korean, so unless something states it's purpose clearly either in English or in body language, I won't buy it.

I went home yesterday halfway through work, and I should still be out, but I'm going to stay. Luckily it's Friday.

In less pleasant news, the good ship My Novel has been running out of steam, and my unblemished record of 500+ words a day was broken, first by computer issues, then my the wicked influenza. Maybe this weekend I'll try to muscle down and get to it, etc.

In the meantime, I am counting down the minutes before I can go home. (both for the day and for the year.)

Don't get me wrong, I feel alright, but alright-for-someone-with-the-'flu... so not great.

WTF VIDEO

I rarely watch videos with my mouth agape. Torn between "wow that's the GAYEST thing I've ever seen" and "wow, this is the most epic awesome version of A Midsummer Night's Dream ever"

the song is more on the gay side, but it being NSFW would be more towards the epic.

AJ, JB, Nikki, for both the good and bad reasons, I recommend you watch.

<lj-embed id="9" />
